Topical steroids can easily be said one of the most overly prescribed medicines that have some of the least amount of research put into them. These types of steroids can be applied to a wide swath of skin conditions, and a few of these will be skin disorders and diseases like eczema, acne, dermatitis, rashes, and psoriasis. Does this guarantee their safety however?

Topical steroids are often considered to be safe simply because they are prescribed by doctors, dermatologists, and medical professionals alike. The reason they are so easily prescribed is because what they do is quickly alter the state of skin problems.

Topical steroids are effective due largely to the speed in which they are absorbed into one's skin cells. The next step they perform is to prevent the onslaught of inflammation-causing chemicals within the skin that usually are unleashed when it reacts to irritation or allergens.

Blood vessels are widened by the inflammation causing chemicals when left untreated. This is what leads to the red and swollen effect. So the advantageous effect is that there is a greatly reduced inflammation caused by the prevention of this release from within the skin. Relief is provided for symptoms such as irritation. The reason topical steroids should be avoided however, is due to the severe side effects the can produce both internally and on the skin.

The negative consequences of choosing topical steroids can be numerous. They can be both internal and external. Here are some of the things that can happen to you:

- Raised blood pressure - Diabetes - Increased aggression - Anaphylactic shock - Birth defects - Blood clotting - Cancer - Cardiovascular disease - Depression - Gynecomastia

In reference to the side effects to the skin, the conditions are just as dangerous. Some of these consequences will entail:

- Skin thinning (atrophy) and stretch marks (striae) - Easy bruising and tearing of the skin - Enlarged blood vessels (telangiectasia) - Perioral dermatitis (rash around the mouth) - Susceptibility to skin infections - Hiding infection e.g. tinea incognito - Allergy to the steroid cream

As you can see, the list of side effects are far more damaging and life threatening than the original problems topical steroids are intended to remove. Topical steroids give off all of these side effects but natural treatments do not. That is their biggest advantage over them. They are just as effective, so they are more highly recommended.
